This kitesurfing and windsurfing area is just outside Auckland city. It is an excellent place for beginners, but those with experience will also find something to entertain them.
The beach is sandy and fairly small, but there is a decent grassy area behind it that can be used for setting up rigging. You don't tend to get any crowds here so there is always enough room to manoeuvre. In the summertime, the water can be up towards 30° C on the north side or about 25° C in the main channel.
December to April is the best time to come out here, when the wind is blowing from the north, north-east or south-west. The northerly thermal will start at just before midday and reach about 15 knots, while the mid-afternoon wind from the south-west is usually around 15 to 25 knots but can be more. Winter and spring winds are best avoided as the direction doesn't work and they are generally too strong in any case. The water is shallow and clean, but just watch out under foot as the bottom isn't great. The surface is choppy in the channel and flat outside it, with the best time to be out being high tide.
There is a decent parking lot right next to the beach, but no other facilities. Auckland is only a short drive away, and has a good nightlife as well as plenty of choice when it comes to places to stay, eat, drink etc.
Watch out for the odd shell on the beach, and avoid the channel unless you have experience as the currents there can be quite strong.
